The global zinc market was in a 129,000 tonne surplus between January and October this year, the World Bureau of Metal Statistics said Wednesday. That compares with a deficit of 73,000 tonnes in the same period last year. Mine production fell 4 per cent to 9.24 million tonnes compared to the first 10 months of 2008. Refined production fell by 452,000 tonnes to 9.27 million tonnes with European Union countries registering a decline of 386,000 tonnes. World demand fell 507,000 tonnes from January to October 2008. Chinese apparent demand totalled 4.029 million tonnes accounting for 44 per cent of the global total. No allowance is made in the consumption calculation for unreported stock changes. — Dow Jones
