The global zinc market was in a 54,000 tonne deficit during the first nine months of 2008, the World Bureau of Metal Statistics said. This compares with a surplus recorded in the January to August period, it said. Mine production was 9.4 per cent higher than the same period last year at 8.88 million tonnes. Refined production also rose, by 364,000 tonnes to 8.73 million tonnes with countries in Asia, in particular China, contributing an additional 315,000 tonnes to the world output. On the other hand, 27-member European Union production fell by 0.3 per cent and NAFTA output was also fractionally lower. World demand was 491,000 tonnes higher than in 2007 with much of the increase recorded in China.
